Atom import script updated

Monday, February 28th 2005
Even though there's plenty of other stuff I should've done, I've gone ahead and [updated the atom import script](http://kode.lurtgjort.no/?atom.php#import-atom.php-9). So what's new and what's what: * You can *assign author and category* for posts upon importing. * Optionally, you can let the script *create new users and categories* on the fly based on the posts * Colour-coded feedback during the import * Not [Blogger](http://blogspot.com) -specific any more (allthough no other atom feeds have been tested) And still: * Provided on a _works-for-me_-basis * Only tested on Wordpress 1.5 (but I suspect it works on 1.2) ## Screenies Check these:

Gmail and false spam positives

Friday, February 25th 2005
I use "the google email service":http://gmail.com every day. It's brilliant. Like others have claimed before me, it really takes web programming to a new level. With spam traffic "amounting to an enormous percentage of the total email traffic":http://www.spamhaus.org/news.lasso?article=156, no mail solution is complete without a spam buster, of course. And gmail's solution is neat and accurate. It _was 'till now_, that is: I have just now rescued three false spam positives from the spam bin. Which boggers me, because the spam count in that bin is *2407* as we speak, and I'm sure i receive a couple of hundred spam a day. In this apolyptic tide of worthless messages, I can easily see a legitimate message drown and float out of my attention. So double-checking the spam bin now and then is not really worth it. And I'm further bothered by the fact that two of the messages were written in Norwegian. Normally, that fact alone should make it pretty probable that the message is not spam - indeed, I have received Norwegian spam two times, and none to the gmail account. So why did the gmail filter trigger on the Norwegian messages? And this means *spammers have ruined email*. I'm not sure that's what they set out to do, but the end result of the arms race and ruthless methology by spammers is that I don't trust gmail any more. Thus email in itself starts to loose its value. Oh, and I've got 50 gmail invites. But I have trouble recommending something I've lost faith in.. So what's the big deal.

Importing atom feeds to WordPress

Thursday, February 17th 2005
I'm a bit surprised that no import scripts for atom feeds exist. It's not _that_ different from rss. I needed to import some [blogger](http://blogger.com/) entries, and I didn't perticularily like the bit where you have to tell blogger to stuff stuff on your server through ftp. Why? My server doesn't run ftp services. So there's that. So I wrote a quick and dirty script to import atom entries. Actually, I just modified the existing _import-rss.php_ script, so it didn't take long. Stuff [this script][kode] in your _wp-admin_ folder, and visit it through your browser. Pray that it works. Email me if it doesn't, but I'm not making any promises... [kode]:http://kode.lurtgjort.no/ "Import your Blogger posts in a breeze" It's tested on Wordpress 1.5. May work for 1.2. May be useless in 1.6, where it seems like the Wordpress guys are [revamping the whole import business](http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_1.6).

Takk, Douglas Adams

WordPress 1.5 cvs

Wednesday, February 2nd 2005
I got the opportunity to try out a recent WordPress nightly build, as I set up a "blog for the recent blogging assignment at school":http://www.orakel.ntnu.no/~havardda/jbi/kulturteori:blogging This is the stuff thatll eventually end up as WP 1.5, the next release of the blogging software. I really like it. Its *smoother*, *prettier* and *easier*. There are a few quirks, I perticularly didnt like that the category view presents excerpts of the posts, not the full text. But still, its better and sleeker than 1.2. Kudos.
